Chapter Twenty-Three

It’s been half an hour since Emma left my room and I’m still smiling. The room’s very hot, like I’m in a furnace.

I stand up to get started on my homework when there’s a blow to my head. It’s as if someone’s slamming an iron baseball bat into the side of my head. It’s even stronger than the last time. My head is going to pop off my neck. I let out a yell as I press my palms to the sides of my head.

“Make it stop,” I say between clenched teeth.

It doesn’t—it just gets worse, like someone bangs cymbals against the back of my head. My vision gets blurry, not like I’m underwater, but like I’m losing my eyesight. Feeling my way to my bed, I lie down. I can’t shut my eyes. They’re glued open. They burn like they’re being scooped out with a spoon.

I’m yelling, but no sound comes out of my mouth. I wish I could pull my head off, just so this pain will stop.

Suddenly, it does and an image enters my head. Of a baby with white hair and green eyes. The area is dark, and I can’t see anything else around him. I feel like I know him. I think he’s me.

The image shifts and I find myself looking through the eyes of the baby, like I’ve become him.

The room isn’t dark anymore and I can make out a man standing before me. He’s got white hair and blue eyes. He’s smiling down at me.

“He’s perfect,” he says to someone behind him. A woman who also has white hair and blue eyes steps closer to me with a small smile on her face.

“What have you named him?” he asks the woman.

“Shadow.”

Shadow? Are these…my memories?

“Hmm…Shadow,” the man says. “Very befitting for the next leader of the ShadowBlades. But no, Vlayne. Varus. That will be his name to the rest of the world. One day, everyone will tremble when they hear the name Varus.”

“Yes, Vladimir,” the woman, Vlayne, says.

The next memory enters my head:

I was six years old and running around ShadowBlade headquarters with my older sister. I was the only one who called her by her real name, Ella. Everyone else called her Varia. She was using her mist and invisibly to hide from me, but I knew her well and anticipated her every move. I was glad I had strength, because once I grabbed her invisible form and held her against the wall, I knew she would lose our little battle. I pressed my hand to her neck, cutting off some of her airflow so she’d be too disoriented to escape from me this time.

But she was sneaky and misted out of my clutch, even when oxygen deprived. “I’ll get you next time, Varia,” I called.

She responded with a giggle. I punched around where the sound came from, but ended up hitting nothing. She was definitely out of the arena by now.

When I left the room, I found our mom, Vlayne, smiling at Ella, patting her cheek and congratulating her on beating me.
